Brief Biography

John Mathiason is Professor of International Relations at the Maxwell School. He was a career staff member of the United Nations Secretariat from 1971-1997 and subsequently consulted with many United Nations system organizations on policy and management issues. He has done extensive research on the management of the international public sector and its institutions, especially in terms of results-based management tools and techniques. Among the organizations with which he has worked are the International Atomic Energy Agency, World Meteorological Organization, the Secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, the Provisional Technical Secretariat of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization, as well as the United Nations Secretariat. He is the co-author of Eliminating Weapons of Mass Destruction: Toward an Effective International Verification Regime (Palgrave, 2005) and the author of Invisible Governance: International Secretariat in Global Politics (Kumarian, 2007) and the forthcoming Internet Governance: A New Frontier for International Institutions (Routledge, 2008). He has authored a large number of articles and paper on results-based management, Internet governance, international regime theory and the role of the international public sector. He has a Ph.D. in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
